Destination wedding DJ jobs are always interesting, since you’re juggling flights, hotels, car rentals, equipment specifications and just trying to find the damn place. I came in a day ahead of time and arrived early enough to attend the rehearsal dinner, were I got to meet everybody face to face for the first time, and I still had enough time to go to the first and oldest tavern in America, (it’s in Newport).
So how did I end up in Newport Rhode Island for the first time? Once in awhile I get a request to handle a DJs professional’s personal event, and while that is an honor it can also be stressful. I have handled my good friend Marty Glassman’s daughters Molly’s Bat Mitzvah, and I have handled a couple of weddings for some local Los Angeles Wedding DJs and just recently my super skilled and creative buddy Tim of “DJ Timbo” asked if I was up to the challenge of handling his brother Robert’s daughter’s wedding in Newport Rhode Island; Tim just wanted the pleasure of being a guest.
We handled a really fun wedding for the Families of Alyssa Boyd & Robert Castle last fall at theCalamigos Ranchin Malibu. This wedding had a lot of style and trend points going for it starting with the color scheme, fabric patterns, candy bar, cigar lounge, photo booth and lastly the club like setting we created for the dance area. So what did we do to light these two rooms you may ask? Well, basically you have two rooms (one’s a tent) and some outdoor seating areas, so we pin spotted all the tables in the tented dining area, highlighting the various size centerpieces and the cake. In the party room we used our LED up lights to surround the room in color and then we used our (4) CX10 instruments to add that matching intense color on the dance floor. Lastly we lit up the lounge areas with some soft white light to create an inviting ambiance to sit and relax. Congratulations to Alyssa and Robert Castle on their amazing Wedding Reception.

Tasty Sounds Entertainment handled the Bell Wedding for Sharon & Ricky and it was fantastic. Ricky’s family (not Jewish) had never done a Hora at any of their events, so this was all new and fun for them, and for everyone else including me. After the ceremony their very cool Violinist, Lee England Jr played for the cocktail hour, performing hip hop soul versions on his Violin. I usually like to play Vitamin String versions of rock songs at weddings but he took songs from artist like Alicia Keys and Adele and killed it, so go to (this link) and watch him. I also worked with a very down to earth Photography and Video team “Wachsman Staley Photography” and two very sweet wedding coordinators from Rose Petal Events, Jacki & Rose. The Odyssey (a valley wedding staple) was super cool to the couple and upgraded them from the Atlantis room (A DJ’s worst nightmare) and moved them up to the Apollo West room, which has one of the best views in the whole San Fernando Valley (Thank God)!!! They also put pipe and drape on the divider wall that splits the two rooms, (a new MUST have upgrade), and with our DMX up-lights, and a gobo lit dance floor it looked amazing, especially with the sun setting over the mountains. My video is just a tiny sliver of the nights grooving vibe, but you’ll get the gist.

We are at theWestlake Village Innat least a couple of times a year, but this is the first time we have set up in the Provence room below the rail, I think I liked it better. This was a very fun couple and Jenelle (what a beautiful bride) found us because we did her sisters Beth wedding about 5 years ago in Moorpark. Beth and Jimmy Thompson’s Wedding (at the end of the video) was so rocking that her sister booked me with a single phone call, price was not an option, she knew what she wanted. Since this is the summer of “Call me Maybe” and all Los Angeles Wedding DJ’s are playing this song, I found a mash-up of Third Eyed Blind and Carly Rae Jepsen that seems perfect, but wait for the crazy “Call Me Maybe” moment toward the end of the video with a bunch of Dudes including the groom Sam.
